Google's Pixel Shipments Grew 20% year-over-year, thanks to Pixel 9 Pro XL
by Alexander Maxham · Android HeadlinesRecently, we have seen a few different articles come out about how well the Pixel 9 is selling for Google. And now, we’re hearing from Counterpoint Research that Google has achieved a 20% year-over-year increase in Q3 2024, mainly due to the earlier and staggered release of the Pixel 9 series.
That does bring the Pixel to about 4% market share in the US, which is the highest market share it has had in Q3 ever. Of course, a big part of that is because the flagship Pixels normally launch in Q4, so Q3 is typically a lower quarter for Pixel sales.
In addition to Google, Motorola also saw a 21% increase year-over-year, while Samsung lost 13% and Apple also lost 2%. Though, Apple’s iPhone launch was in the last couple weeks of Q3 so that loss is normal for Apple.
Google’s Pixel 9 Pro XL is now in the top 10 best-selling premium phones in the US
What’s driving this growth for Google? Well, it’s actually the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Which has now jumped into the top 10 best-selling premium phones in the US. That puts it up there with the latest from Apple and Samsung, though Counterpoint did not publish the full list of the 10 best-selling premium phones, yet.
What’s also helping Google gain so much market share is the choice of Pro models. Now, you can get the smaller Pixel 9 Pro or the larger Pixel 9 Pro XL and it’s essentially the same phone – aside from the display size and battery size. That’s not something Google has done before. So now you can get a flagship phone, without it being the largest phone on the market.
This is all great news for Google, and does prove that moving the launch up a couple of months was the right move. Not to mention the fact that Google also hit it out of the park with the Pixel 9 this year. The entire lineup is incredible this year, which we’ve not been able to say that in recent years.
