Kate Garraway was moved to tears at the National Television Awards on Wednesday night as she accepted an award for her documentary about her late husband Derek Draper, with their two children by her side.

In a touching family moment that warmed the hearts of viewers, Kate's teenage daughter Darcey was seen making a sweet gesture towards her younger brother Billy. The glamorous event took an emotional turn when their mother won the award for Best Authored Documentary.

Darcey, 18, who lost her beloved father Derek Draper earlier this year, was spotted comforting her 15-year-old brother at London's O2 Arena. Good Morning Britain star Kate, 57, delivered a tearful speech after winning the award for her poignant documentary detailing the struggles of caring for her late husband Derek, who passed away following a four-year battle with complications from Covid.

When it was announced that 'Derek's Story' - which chronicled the final year of their late father's life - had won the award for Best Authored Documentary, the cameras panned to siblings Darcey and Billy. They were beaming with pride as their mother rose to accept the award.

Viewers then noticed Darcey tenderly rubbing her younger brother's shoulders as he was overwhelmed with emotion during the special moment, reports the Mirror.

While accepting her award, Kate left the audience visibly moved as she dedicated her triumph to her late husband and to carers across the UK, emphasising that they are often underappreciated for their tireless and emotionally charged work as caregivers work which she deeply understood, having cared for Derek in his last year.

Kate began her emotional speech by saying: "This is a bittersweet one, isn't it? It's very bitter to be here, with the gorgeous Darcey and Billy. I promised them they didn't have to say anything. We're halfway through the first year of firsts really. A first Easter and first birthday, without Derek. It's so strange to be here for the first Television Awards without him."

The evening saw Darcey and Billy accompanying their mother on the red carpet, with the teenage Darcey turning heads in her chic polka dot gown and younger brother Billy looking smart in a sleek black tuxedo.

Darcey's appearance at the event led fans to heap praise on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. One user enthused: "Kate Garraway's daughter is so beautiful and so strong already. She is going to grow into an incredible young woman." Another admirer posted: "Wow! Darcey Draper is stunning. Her dad would be so proud of her."

A comment was also shared by someone who reflected on the adversity that both children have faced: "Those two kids have been through so much. They've not only lost their father, but they've lost him in front of the whole world. They are both a credit to Kate and of course, their late dad Derek."

Kate Garraway has experienced a poignant moment at the National Television Awards following her touching tribute to her husband Derek on what would have been their 20th wedding anniversary. Sharing with her 1.3 million Instagram followers, Kate opened up about the significance of the day.

"Today would've been my 20th wedding anniversary to Derek. I mean, it still is my 20th wedding anniversary to Derek, it's just one of those days, that we've talked about, like Christmas to come, Easter. All of those things - his birthday - where you really feel a punch to the stomach."

"This one, particularly, I've been feeling really sorry for myself, I'm afraid, because it's such a personal thing. The others are as much, when he was here, made about the family, friends, all of that, whereas this day is so particularly special to him and I. The fact that he's not here makes me feel very sad and notice his absence like a roaring, roaring train."

She continued: "I've been the leaning into the grief, as everyone says you have to, and I've been re-reading some of his lovely anniversary messages on previous cards which I feel so grateful to have had that kind of romance and love in my life. I'm so lucky."
