A 29-year-old Irish man has been found dead in a prison cell in Portugal.

The man was arrested on Tuesday following an alleged assault on his partner.

She has since been released.

The couple had travelled to Albufeira to attend a social occasion earlier this week.

Portuguese police are investigating and gardaí are liaising with the Portuguese authorities and the families.

In a statement to RTÉ News, the Office of the Portuguese Attorney General in Lisbon said: "As is always the case in these types of situations, an inquiry has been ordered along with an autopsy."

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the incident and is providing consular assistance.
