Tyson Fury storms out of ring after Oleksandr Usyk fight after seeing scorecard
Tyson Fury's bid to dethrone Oleksandr Usyk in their heavyweight world title rematch ended in defeat as the Ukrainian took a unanimous victory with all three judges scoring it 116-112
by Alex Richards · The MirrorTyson Fury failed in his bid to return to the pinnacle of heavyweight boxing - and stormed out of the ring in disgust.
Oleksandr Usyk defended his WBA, WBO and WBC heavyweight titles in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, winning via unanimous decision with scores of 116-112 from all three judges. And as Usyk celebrated his victory in their rematch - seven months after their first meeting - Fury didn't hang around for the post-fight interviews.
The Gypsy King immediately left without doing his in-ring interviews, having been shown the judges scorecards. And Fury's promoter, Frank Warren, made his gross displeasure with the scoring crystal clear.
“It’s impossible," said Warren of the scoring. “How did Tyson only get four rounds in this fight? Everyone across the front all thought the same way.”
A seething Warren added: "It’s nuts. Did you only give him four rounds. Nuts. I don’t get it. Really disappointed with that.
“I thought Tyson was in control. Thought he boxed extremely well. One judge didn’t give him any round from round six onwards. How can that be? Same with the other judge here. He gave him one round of the last six. It’s crazy. A nonsense.
"Oscar de le Hoya and I had him [Fury] winning by three or four rounds. What fight were they watching? You lose you lose, that’s fair enough. But come on. It’s nuts.”
Asked about what the future might hold for Fury, Warren said: “He’s very very disappointed. He thought he won it. Of course we are biased but I’m not stupid biased. I’d like to think I know what I’m looking at.
“It was a good boxing performance by him. He used all his physical attributes. He stayed focused. I mean, come on, count the jabs. All you want is a level playing field and a fair crack of the whip. But that scoring is not good whatsoever."
In the backstage area before he returned to the ring, Fury insisted: "Honestly, I thought I won by three rounds".
Asked about the scorecards, Usyk looked perplexed and said simply: "I win. I'm perfect."
Speaking on TNT Sports, Steve Bunce claimed that Fury could have left the ring after Daniel Dubois - also represented by Warren - entered the ring to challenge Usyk. The Ukrainian had little time for Dubois' loud-mouthed challenge, and paid tribute to Fury, declaring: "Tyson is a great fighter. A great opponent. Unbelievable 24 rounds for my career. Thank you so much."
