The FA have thanked Lee Carsley for his interim spell as England boss and confirmed he will head back to his role with the U21s after Thomas Tuchel's appointment was confirmed.

Carsley had stepped into the void left by Gareth Southgate after he stepped down following Euro 2024. The ex-Republic of Ireland international had led the U21s impressively, guiding them to Euros glory, and was handed the reigns on an interim basis.

There was talk of 50-year-old eventually taking the job full-time. The FA had appointed Southgate as England boss following his development with the U21s and that pathway was potentially going to be utilised again - only for the Wembley bosses to opt for a big name.

Carsley has won three of his four games in charge across two separate international breaks. His only loss came against Greece recently, but the manager himself gave mixed managers regarding whether or not he wanted the job and will now return to his old role.

FA CEO Mark Bullingham said: "I would like to thank Lee for stepping up and doing everything we asked of him – he is a very talented coach and a major part of our England pathway. He will now focus on retaining the U21 EURO title in the summer.
