Mikel Arteta has already been told that the club needs to win trophies as the Arsenal manager gets set to extend his contract.

The Spaniard, 42, has transformed the Gunners' fortunes since landing the top job at The Emirates back in 2019 by re-establishing the Londoners as bonafide Premier League title contenders.

And although the title evaded Arsenal for a second successive year on the final day of last season, Arteta is set to be rewarded for the progress the club have made during his tenure with a new deal which runs until the summer of 2027.

Arteta endured a difficult start to his time in the Arsenal hot seat, but both his and the club's position on where Arsenal should be has never waned.

And he vowed during private discussions with the club's owners Stan and Josh Kroenke at the start of his reign that he would get the club back to challenging for major honours.

Outlining details of those talks, which occurred back in 2019, Arteta said previously: “We need to be competing for the top trophies in the game. That's been made very clear to me in my discussions with [owners] Stan and Josh Kroenke and the senior people from the club.”

The Athletic were the first to reveal that Arteta and Arsenal had reached an agreement on a new contract on Thursday. Arteta's previous deal was due to expire next summer.

Arsenal were pipped to the title on the final day of the 2023/24 campaign by Manchester City, who are likely to be the Gunners' main rivals for the domestic crown again.

But Arteta revealed last month that his players were hungry to go one better this year by winning the club's first league title in over 20 years. He said: “We had a gathering together the same evening with all the club players and the players were saying to me, ‘We’re going to be better, we’re going to do it, we want more’. They are the ones driving that ambition. So that’s always positive.

“Everybody was talking about the same thing, that we are not going to stop here and that we want much more. We know the things that we can still do better and how the players can still evolve. How we have evolved as a club is huge as well.

“Whether it is pain, whether there are experiences, whether there are moments where you have to accept that somebody else has been better and this is sport. And you want to get to where you aren’t at the moment, and that as well is really inspiring.”
