Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, has expressed his outrage at the treatment of Oleksandr Usyk after the boxer was detained at Krakow Airport.

"[I] talked on the phone with Oleksandr Usyk when he was detained," Zelensky wrote on Telegram. "I was outraged by this attitude towards our citizen and champion.

"He instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sibiza and the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko to immediately find out all the details of the incident at the Krakow airport. As soon as I was informed that everything is fine, our champion was released and no one is detaining him anymore."

Usyk has also issued a statement of his own. "Dear friends, a misunderstanding took place. It was quickly resolved," he wrote on social media.

"Thanks to all who got concerned," Usyk continued. "Thanks to Ukrainian diplomats for the efficient support. And respect to Polish Police for conducting their obligations with no regards to height, weight, reach and regalia. Thanks God for everything."

Usyk's wife Kate earlier issued a statement of her own on Instagram. "Everything is ok, everything is fine!!! Oleksandr will explain everything later!!! nothing to be criminal ... Good night to you all!!!" she wrote.

Usyk, 37, had been expected in London this weekend to attend the heavyweight bout between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium. He has also begun his training camp ahead of his own upcoming fight against Tyson Fury, which is in the diary for December.

The Ukrainian fighter was crowned undisputed heavyweight world champion when he beat Fury back in May. That victory ensured he remains undefeated throughout his career, across 22 bouts.

"He has a contract and so do I until December 31; we have to hold this fight up to and including then," Usyk said of his rematch with Fury. "If he pulls out December 21, he will lose all of his money and dividends and won't be a man of his word anymore."

In the months leading up to his December bout, Usyk had an appearance planned at the upcoming Dubois vs Joshua meeting. Both Dubois and Joshua have been beaten by Usyk in their most recent meetings, and Dubois has talked up his chances of upsetting his opponent.

"I've got to make him quit, break him down, That's my mindset going into this. Making him quit, breaking him," he told Sky Sports. "I believe I can. I'm turning it round now at this stage of my career.

"I've come through my ups and downs, just turning it round. [I'm going to] enjoy the moment, let all the talking be done, let all the statements be made. I'm in a good place right now and I'm ready to fight. I looked into his eyes, and I don't know, I'm so used to it now. It's part of the game."
