Cross-Cultural Comedy-Horror ‘Pontianaks’ Unveiled at Taiwan Creative Content Fest

by · Variety

Southeast Asian folklore meets Taiwanese culture in “Pontianaks in Taiwan,” a mini-series that follows two undead supernatural beings on a road trip across Taiwan. The project, currently in development, is being presented at the Taiwan Creative Content Fest (TCCF).

The series centers on two Pontianaks – bloodthirsty female vampires from Malay folklore – who leave Singapore in search of a new home in Taiwan. Creator, co-writer, executive producer and director Goh Ming Siu draws inspiration from classic Hong Kong horror-comedies like the “Mr. Vampire” series.

“Growing up in Singapore, I’ve always been fascinated by our local and regional folk tales, which are not often represented outside of the area,” says Goh. “In this story, I’ve merged two of my favourite things to share my love for Southeast Asian folklore with the world.”

The project tackles timely themes of immigration and belonging. “‘What is home?’ That is the main question our two Pontianaks ask themselves as they embark on a road trip in Taiwan in search of new refuge, and it’s a question that many young people today grapple with when it comes to immigration and laying down roots,” explains executive producer and co-writer Karl Gan.

Producer and writer Holly Chan, who brings her Taiwanese perspective to the project, notes the series’ unique cultural positioning. “Comedy and cross-cultural narratives have always been close to my heart. I immediately saw the rich comedic potential in placing these ‘monstrous’ ladies in uniquely Taiwanese settings and situations.”

The series will feature two actresses of Malay ethnicity speaking Mandarin, adding another layer to its cross-cultural appeal. The production team aims to begin script development and financing throughout 2025, with production scheduled for Q2 2026 and a target release date of Q1 2027.

Goh is an award-winning filmmaker with over 20 years’ experience in Singapore’s media industry. His feature film “Repossession” (2019) won multiple awards.

Gan’s credits include co-creating and head writing “The Last Bout” (2024). He received an International Emmy nomination for Best Comedy for “Fam!” (2018) and created the Audible series “Therapy Z” (2022).

Holly Chan, founder of Neverland Entertainment., is known for producing stories featuring strong female protagonists and immigrants. Her work includes multiple Golden Bell-winning productions.
