The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) was a night to remember, with highlights including a steamy on-stage kiss between Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom and a surprising loss for Taylor Swift.

Each year, the biggest names in music gather for the VMAs to celebrate the best in music videos. This year's event was no exception, with a host of star-studded guests, unexpected losses, heated arguments, passionate on-stage chemistry and eye-catching outfits.

As one of the biggest nights in music draws to a close, we're looking back at some of the most memorable moments.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom's steamy kiss

One of the standout moments of the evening was a steamy on-stage kiss between power couple Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom. The Pirates of the Caribbean actor presented his pop star partner with the MTV Video Vanguard award, affectionately using her real name, Katheryn Hudson, multiple times during his heartfelt tribute.

Orlando Bloom was full of love as he handed over the trophy to Katy Perry, saying: "You fell in love with her as Katy Perry," before adding, "I fell in love with her as Katheryn Hudson. You know her as a global superstar who brings love, light, and her unique sense of humour to every song she writes and music video she creates. I know her as a mother, as a partner who brings that same love and joy to our family."

He went on to praise her impact: "In moments when we've most needed it, her music and the remarkable world she creates have brought a sense of joy and laughter, inspiring generations of people from all over the world. She loves with her whole heart and is kind of irresistible. I see her reflected everywhere in our home, in her love for her work, but especially in her love for her fans."

Wrapping up his heartfelt speech, Orlando said: "Congratulations on this honour, baby. I'm so proud of you. 143. Ladies and gentlemen, the 2024 MTV Video Vanguard Katheryn Hudson. Katy Perry! ".

Katy Perry reveals she's 'on the first day of her period'

Meanwhile, Katy Perry dropped a bombshell during the VMAs with a candid revelation about her menstrual cycle. The 39 year old pop icon, while accepting the prestigious MTV Video Vanguard Award, confessed to the audience that she had been performing her high-flying stunts while grappling with the first day of her period. She told the audience: "I did that all on the first day of my period, and couldn't believe it."

Expressing her disbelief at her own feat, she also took a moment to express gratitude towards MTV for embracing her "weirdness" right from the outset of her dazzling career.

Katy Perry certainly didn't hold back during her performance, making a grand entrance by soaring above the stage amidst a dazzling laser light show. Throughout the concert, fans were treated to a visual feast as she belted out some of her biggest hits including Dark Horse, E.T. , California Gurls, Teenage Dream, I Kissed A Girl, and tracks from her latest album.

Sabrina Carpenter shock

In a surprising turn of events, Taylor Swift was left in shock as her protege Sabrina Carpenter scooped the Song Of The Year award at the ceremony. Sabrina's summer hit Espresso beat Taylor's Fortnite featuring Post Malone, which was also nominated in the same category.

Upon receiving the award, Sabrina delivered an emotional speech expressing gratitude to her team and fans. The 25 year old star said: "I've literally never won one of these. This is really special. The first people I want to thank are the fans. If you clap after everything I say, they're gonna call me off the stage, so one second."

She went on to add: "I just want to say that you guys are the reason that I get to do what I love, but also the reason that we get to have so much fun and share music with each other. And I just feel so grateful to have the best, truly, the best fans in the world. I know it sounds cheesy, but I love you."

She concluded her speech by saying: "Thank you to my managers. Thank you to my family, my cats and dogs that are at home watching, and thank you to the people that made "Espress" with me...I love you guys so much. I love making music with you, and I can't wait to share more with the world. And thank you to that me espresso."

Despite this, Taylor scooped up the Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration awards for her duet with Post Malone.

Megan Thee Stallion pays homage to Britney Spears

Megan Thee Stallion paid tribute to Britney Spears in a jaw-dropping way at the VMAs. She brought out a live snake to recreate Britney Spears' iconic 'I'm a Slave 4 U' outfit as she hosted the 2024 VMAs.

Megan Thee Stallion commanded attention

In a memorable moment, the rapper was seen donning an outfit almost identical to the Princess of Pop's - a busty green bra, metallic booty shorts, rhinestone-covered suede tan boots, body jewellery, and of course, a yellow reptile wrapped around her.

After briefly recreating the moment to the tune of Britney's hit 2001 song, Megan humorously screamed out: "OK! OK! Stop the music! Stop the music! I'm just playing! Come get this thing! I don't know this thing; this thing don't know me."

Chappell Roan's heated photographer bust-up

Pop sensation Chappell Roan found herself embroiled in a fiery exchange with a photographer during her red carpet appearance at the awards ceremony. Dressed to impress in a knight-inspired ensemble complete with a green cloak and sword, Chappell's moment on the red carpet took a dramatic turn.

While her entourage was busy adjusting her attire, tensions flared when someone shouted: "Shut the f--k up."

The singer quickly retaliated, pointing at an individual and firing back: "You shut the f--k up! " Although what followed wasn't entirely clear, Chappell's voice rang out distinctly as she exclaimed: "No! Not me b- - -h."

The incident didn't sit well with fans who promptly voiced their opinions on X, the platform that has taken over from Twitter. One fan expressed their dismay, commenting: "It's been two minutes and she's already complaining."

Another questioned: "Why is she already mad? " A third fan labelled the behaviour as "So annoying." While another concurred, calling it "unprofessional."
