Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow closes after man plunges from balcony

Emergency services raced to Royal Exchange Square at around 12:30pm today after a man fell from a balcony at Glasgow's Gallery of Modern Art

Glasgow's Gallery of Modern Art was forced to close its doors early after a visitor plunged from a balcony - as emergency services rushed to the incident.

The frightening fall, which occurred around 12.30pm on Wednesday, September 11, saw multiple police and ambulance units in attendance at the city centre gallery in Royal Exchange Square. The extent of the man's injuries remains unknown.

It is expected that the gallery will reopen at 10am on Thursday, September 12 A spokesperson for the Gallery of Modern Art stated: "The Gallery of Modern Art has closed early today after a member of the public fell from a balcony. Emergency services are in attendance. The building will reopen as normal tomorrow, Thursday 12 September at 10am."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 12:23 to attend an incident on Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow. We dispatched one ambulance, one paramedic response unit (PRU), and one trauma team to the scene."

A police spokesperson also confirmed the man had "fallen from height" as officers rushed to the scene, reports GlasgowLive. They added: "Emergency services are in attendance at Royal Exchange Square after reports a man had fallen from height inside an art gallery. Police were notified 12.30pm on Wednesday, 11 September, 2024. Enquiries are ongoing. Officers remain at the scene."

The incident comes just weeks after a trampoline park in Salford was forced to close its doors after a child suffered a "medical emergency." Bounce Central in the Pendlebury area shut on August 29 as emergency crews raced to the scene. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed officers and paramedicsresponded to reports of a medical emergency involving a child.

In a post on Facebook, Bounce Central said: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, Bounce Central Salford will be closed for the rest of today (Thursday 29th August). Please contact us if you have pre booked for this afternoon and we will be happy to rearrange your session."

An eyewitness reported seeing an air ambulance at the scene. No further details have been released at this stage, though circumstances are not believed to be suspicious.
