Ten devices in your home are adding to your energy bills without you noticing, people are being warned. Laptops and smart speakers are among the products in your home that are guzzling energy when doing nothing.

They are the so-called vampire appliances of your home. And UK households are being warned they could save £80 just by turning them off.

A recent survey by Quotezone revealed that 82% were unaware of what a vampire device was. They have pinpointed ten of the 'energy-guzzling' gadgets which are gnawing away at Brits' energy bills this autumn while on standby.

The survey revealed that 55% of individuals leave their household appliances on standby, potentially leading to up to 23% of electricity wastage. A simple action like flicking a few switches can prevent electronics from consuming nearly a quarter of a home's energy.

The most energy-intensive appliances are electronic devices such as desktop computers, laptops, gaming consoles and TVs, which are almost always left on standby. The survey indicated that 83% were unaware their TV was an energy-draining device and 57% leave it switched on throughout the year, seldom unplugging it.

Most households are unaware of the actual cost of these energy-draining appliances, but in reality, they can account for around 5% of a typical electricity bill. Appliances that use water, such as dishwashers and washing machines, also made the list as they are almost always left on standby, reports Devon Live.

Tiffany Mealiff, a price comparison expert at Quotezone.co.uk, stated: "The simplest way to reduce your energy usage and save money is to eliminate vampire appliances and avoid unnecessary waste. It may only seem like small costs, a fiver here and there, but it all adds up. Leaving the items on our top ten appliances list on standby throughout the year could cost nearly £80. Although it can be tedious to turn on and off your devices every time they're not in use, it can make a difference to your household bills long term and avoids paying for energy you're not using."
