Vet shares top 11 dog breeds to adopt – with one 'dangerous' and illegal in the UK

A veterinary professional shared the breeds of dogs she would love to own - even the one that is banned in the UK. However, she did add a disclaimer that it's not a recommendation

The UK is home to over 222 recognised dog breeds, each with its own unique charm and characteristics.

When picking a four-legged friend, it's essential to consider whether your lifestyle aligns with the needs of the breed, especially in terms of exercise, affection, and space. For example, a Border Collie might find life in a flat with minimal walks quite challenging as they flourish when given tasks and wide-open spaces to expend their energy.

It stands to reason that a dog's behaviour can be greatly influenced by their living environment, and with the right care and conditions, any pooch has the potential for a happy life.

Those contemplating getting a dog and seeking advice may find insights from a trainee vet useful. Connie shared on TikTok her list of 11 preferable dogs, even including one breed considered dangerous and illegal in the UK.

Posting with cautionary advice, vet tech Connie stated: "Please do not take any of the following breeds as recommendations. Just because I would own it as a veterinary professional does not that it would be a good fit for your lifestyle. Please do your own research."

Topping her list is the beloved Golden Retriever. Renowned globally and attracting over 10,447 registrations in the UK alone in 2023, these amiable, gentle dogs are known for their ease of training, compatibility with other animals, and friendliness towards children.

Connie penned: "Would do any hiking, swimming, sport with their owner because they're just happy to be included."

Next on the list is the Greyhound. Known for being good with kids, very gentle, and quick learners, they surprisingly require no more than an hour of exercise a day and thrive on family interaction. Connie continued: "I love how awkward they are."

Thirdly, Connie praises the standard poodle, which she characterises as "smart and self-aware" even comparing them to having a "human roommate". Following closely is the boxer at number four, about which she expressed: "The sweetest babies ever, I've never met a mean one. Their brains are the size of a pea."

Included in the lineup are the diminutive long-haired Chihuahua and the imposing Cane Corso. Connie observed that Chihuahuas rarely come in for health issues, except for their tendency to lose teeth. She also commented on the Cane Corso, noting that despite needing extensive training, they are "so worth it".

Another large breed Connie wouldn't hesitate to own is the Rottweiler, which she affectionately describes as "when bred and raised right they are the equivalent to a potato with feelings".

In a contentious statement, Connie mentioned she would readily own an American Pit Bull Terrier, despite its status as a banned breed in the UK since 1991 under the Dangerous Dogs Act, following several fatal attacks by the breed. Connie remarked: "When raised right they are literally the perfect breed."

Connie, a dog lover, has spoken about breeds often misunderstood, specifically praising the American Staffordshire Terrier. She shared: "So sweet, they have no idea they're even a dog - they're just happy to be alive."

Regarding another breed, she spoke highly of the American Bulldog, which she described as the "best combination of love bug and guard dog," noting they usually enjoy good health.
