by Jacqueline Raphael · Borneo Post OnlineMIRI (Dec 8): Eleven-month-old Rhea Moh Ning Xuan, who urgently needed RM55,000 for a cochlear implant, has successfully reached her fundraising goal.
This was made possible through a fundraising campaign led by state Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting, who is also chairman of Miri Cochlear Implant Association.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Ting announced that a total of RM73,491.60 had been raised, exceeding the RM55,000 targeted.
“With the amount achieved, the fundraising campaign has officially ended.
“A total of RM20,920 was raised on Dec 4, RM31,347 was obtained on Dec 5, and RM21,224.60 was received yesterday (Dec 6),” he said.
The cost of Moh’s cochlear implant amounts to RM125,000, excluding surgical and other medical expenses.
Her parents have raised RM70,000 on their own, and the remaining RM55,000 was successfully raised with public support.
Ting disclosed that Miri Hospital will arrange for Moh’s cochlear implant surgery as soon as possible, with the procedure expected to take place in the third week of this month or January next year.
He explained that the surplus funds from the fundraising campaign would be allocated to the girl’s subsequent medical expenses, including follow-up treatments in Kuching.
Meanwhile, Ting expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all the generous individuals who contributed silently behind the scenes and to everyone who shared and spread the news about the fundraising campaign.
He emphasised that this collective effort has brought hope to the society, as well as warmth and support to those in need.
He also thanked donors from across Sarawak, including friends from Kuching and Miri, for their support.
“Regardless of the amount of donation, every contribution represents a significant show of support for Rhea Moh Ning Xuan.
“This swift success in achieving this fundraising goal showcases a strong sense of community and compassion within our society,” he said, adding that all the funds raised were made possible through the generosity and efforts of many caring individuals.
“In a short period, the cumulative donations reached the target, reflecting the power of collective love and kindness,” he pointed out.
Ting believes that with greater compassion and positive energy, the society can continue to care for and support those in need, providing assistance to various groups and creating a better future for them.
