Sir Elton John included his sons in new doc to show families 'come in all shapes and sizes'
Sir Elton John and husband David Furnish included their sons Zachary and Elijah in new doc to show families 'come in all shapes and sizes'
by Ashleigh Rainbird · The MirrorSir Elton John and David Furnish chose to feature their two sons in the singer’s biopic, to demonstrate how families “come in all shapes and sizes”.
The couple are parents to Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11, who have largely been kept out of the spotlight, but are seen embracing their dad on stage at LA’s Dodger Stadium in Elton John: Never Too Late, and FaceTiming their dad while he is away on tour.
David, who co-directs the film, notes that the youngsters were not initially on board, but he encouraged them to show how children with two fathers are “just like anybody’s kids”.
“They were a little uncomfortable at first when they saw it,” David tells Radio Times (MUST). “But then we talked about what this film might do in terms of showing people in the world that having two dads is the same as any other family.
“That you don’t need a mum and a dad – that families come in all shapes and sizes – which is what we’ve read to them in their story books since they were born.”
In another poignant scene, Elton says he would love to see their sons Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11, get married, but says sadly: “I don’t think I’m going to be around for that.”
Elton, 74, has multiple health issues, and David says seeing them on screen is “upsetting”: “Because in my mind I sort of think Elton is going to live for ever – we all think that – and Elton is so vibrant that it’s an easy thing to believe, but it forces you to confront that reality.”
