'I'm a vet – here are the dogs I'd have as pets including one that's illegal in UK'

There are more than 222 recognised breeds of dogs in the UK but a trainee vet shared her insight on the 11 kinds she would happily adopt, including one which has been deemed dangerous and illegal in the UK

The UK is home to more than 222 recognised breeds of delightful dogs, each bringing its own special charm.

There are loads of different types to choose from if you're on the lookout for a new pet. However, all prospective dog owners should weigh their lifestyle against the needs of a potential canine companion, taking into account exercise, attention, and space.

Border collies, for example, are not cut out for life in a cramped city flat with minimal walks, they need jobs to do and open spaces to burn off energy. With that said, a dog's behaviour is often a product of its environment, and any breed can flourish under appropriate conditions.

Amid the buzz around choosing the perfect four-legged friend, a trainee vet has weighed in with her chosen breeds, despite some falling under the controversial 'dangerous and illegal' category within the UK.

Taking to TikTok, vet tech Connie provided her personal perspective on the canine candidates fit for cohabitation but her video came powered with a disclaimer to followers. She wrote: "Please do not take any of the following breeds as recommendations. Just because I would own it as a veterinary professional does not that it would be a good fit for your lifestyle. Please do your own research."

Leading her list of magnificent mutts is none other than the Golden Retriever. These adorable dogs are a global favourite, and it's no surprise the UK saw over 10,447 newly registered Goldens in 2023 alone.

Known for their sweet nature, tranquillity, and trainability, these pups vibe well with other pets and are fabulous with kids. Connie penned: "Would do any hiking, swimming, sport with their owner because they're just happy to be included."

Next on the list is the Greyhound. Known for being good with kids, very gentle and quick learners, they surprisingly don't need more than an hour of exercise a day and thrive on family interaction. Connie added: "I love how awkward they are."

The third spot goes to the standard poodle, which Connie described as "smart and self-aware" even comparing them to a "human roommate". Following closely is the boxer at number four, with Connie noting: "The sweetest babies ever, I've never met a mean one. Their brains are the size of a pea."

Also making the cut are the tiny long-haired chihuahua and the imposing Cane Corso. Connie observed that chihuahuas rarely come in for health issues, except for their teeth falling out. She also mentioned while a Cane Corso needs ample training, they are "so worth it".

Another large breed Connie wouldn't hesitate to own is the Rottweiler, describing them as "when bred and raised right they are the equivalent to a potato with feelings".

In a controversial stance, Connie expressed she would readily own an American Pit Bull Terrier, despite it being a banned breed in the UK since 1991 under the Dangerous Dogs Act following several fatal attacks. Connie remarked about them: "When raised right they are literally the perfect breed."

Connie has heartily defended the often-misjudged American Staffordshire Terrier, saying she'd gladly make one part of her family. She said: "So sweet, they have no idea they're even a dog - they're just happy to be alive."

In addition, Connie heaped praise on the American bulldog, hailing it as the "best combination of love bug and guard dog," and emphasised their general robust health.
