Vet lists dog breeds they'd keep as pets – including one that's illegal in UK

A vet gave their professional insight into which dog breeds are the most agreeable to them – and some of the choices are a bit controversial. Here's all you need to know

by · Daily Record

Picking the correct dog breed can be harder than it sounds. The UK is home to more than 222 types of pooch – and different ones could be good for different types of people.

While some pick active working canines for farms or police-work, others want lap dogs or loyal pets that will slot right into a happy family.

So if you're feeling a bit overwhelmed, listen up. A vet recently shared the breeds they are most drawn to – and some of the choices may surprise you.

It all comes down to personal choice though, so she doesn't necessarily recommend people copy her. Taking to TikTok, vet tech Connie said: "Please do not take any of the following breeds as recommendations. Just because I would own it as a veterinary professional does not that it would be a good fit for your lifestyle. Please do your own research."

Vet's top seven dog breeds

1. Golden retriever

These adorable dogs are a global favourite, and it's no surprise the UK saw over 10,447 newly registered Goldens in 2023 alone. Known for their sweet nature, tranquillity, and trainability, these pups vibe well with other pets and are fabulous with kids.

Connie added: "Would do any hiking, swimming, sport with their owner because they're just happy to be included."

2. Greyhound

You may think these dogs require a lot of space and exercise, but this isn't necessarily the case. They sleep a LOT – and only need around one hour of activity a day.

They are known for being good with kids, are very gentle and quick learners, and thrive on family interaction. Connie added: "I love how awkward they are."

3. Standard poodle

Poodles are known for their high intelligence. They are one of the most trainable dog breeds and excel in obedience and agility training.

Some also love the dogs because they often have hypoallergenic coats that are less likely to shed. Connie describes this breed as "smart and self-aware", even comparing them to a "human roommate".

4. Boxer

Many of us fell in love with the Boxer that featured on a previous John Lewis Christmas advert – and Connie is a big fan too. This is even though they can be a bit dopey on occasion!

Connie noted: "The sweetest babies ever, I've never met a mean one. Their brains are the size of a pea."

5. Long-haired Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are one of the smallest dog breeds, making them ideal for people who live in apartments or smaller homes. Their small size also makes them easy to carry around and travel with.

They have very big personalities inside those tiny bodies. And Connie observed that chihuahuas rarely come in for health issues, except for their teeth falling out.

6. Cane Corso

Also making the cut is the imposing Cane Corso. They are known for their loyal and protective natures.

They have a natural instinct to guard their family and home, making them excellent watchdogs. Their imposing size and alertness can be a significant deterrent to intruders. While they often need ample training, Connie thinks they are "so worth it".

7. American Pit Bull Terrier

In a controversial stance, Connie expressed she would readily own an American Pit Bull Terrier, despite it being a banned breed in the UK since 1991 under the Dangerous Dogs Act following several fatal attacks.

Connie remarked about them: "When raised right they are literally the perfect breed."
