Kmart is recalling Christmas quilt covers that have been linked with health problems in Australia.

Customers across the Tasman have complained of suffering lung and heart inflammation after being exposed to the bedding.

Shoppers in New Zealand have also complained about the smell of the products.

Shoppers posting in a Kmart group on Facebook said there was a "very strong oil smell", even after several washes.

A Kmart spokesperson said it took the quality of its products seriously.

"Regardless of whether they have experienced any issue, customers who have purchased the Mrs & Mrs Claus Reversible Queen Size Bed Quilt Cover Set and Christmas Elf Reversible Single Bed Quilt Cover Set may return the product to store for a refund."

The spokesperson said anyone with questions should contact its customer service number.

"We have taken the proactive step of providing notification via the formal recall in New Zealand of a voluntary product recall. The public recall notice will follow in the coming days."
