Aston Villa face Bayern Munich in their first Champions League home match this evening in a fixture replete with historical references.

No Villan will need reminding that Bayern were the opponents when the Claret & Blues won the European Cup in the final in Rotterdam in 1982. A more perfect homecoming could not have been dreamt.

Yet, for all the pride at past achievements, tonight's game is very much about the present and making sure Villa are able to build on the 3-0 away win registered in their Champions League opener.

Despite all the furore about exorbitant ticket prices, the game will be sold out meaning for many the best option will be the TV. Here's what you need to know.

The match takes place at Villa Park on Wednesday, October 2 and kicks-off at 8pm

What's the team news?

Bayern have been sweating on the fitness of Harry Kane who was subbed with an injury in the 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend. The striker trained at Bayern's training ground this morning before Vincent Kompany and his squad flew out to Birmingham.

Unai Emery has confirmed right-back Matty Cash has returned to full training but he will not be fit to feature against Bayern. John McGinn, Boubacar Kamara and Tyrone Mings are out.

What's happened so far?

Bayern won their first Champions League league phase game 9-2 against Dinamo Zagreb, while Villa defeated BSC Young Boys 3-0 at the Wankdrof Stadium in Bern.

Villa come into the game against Bayern on the back of a 2-2 draw with Ipswich at Portman Road, while the German giants drew 1-1 with Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen on home soil.
