Devastating Fire Engulfs School Bus in Thailand, Killing 25 Children and Teachers
by Azri Azizan · WORLD OF BUZZIn a tragic incident yesterday (October 1) in Thailand, a bus carrying children and teachers was engulfed in a massive fire, resulting in at least 23 fatalities.
A viral video on social media shows the school bus engulfed in flames under a flyover on the outskirts of the capital Bangkok, and according to authorities, the bodies of 20 children and 3 teachers have been retrieved and identified. Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit revealed that 16 students and 3 teachers were taken to the hospital for medical care.
The students were on a field trip from the province of Uthai Thani, about 250km north of the capital.
What could’ve caused the fire?
In a press conference, acting police chief Kittirat Phanphet said the explosion was caused by a spark from the tyre that lit the gas cylinder that was powering the vehicle.
“After speaking to witnesses, we are investigating all individuals, including the bus company to see if this was a case of negligence.
Suriyahe also said the bus was powered by “extremely risky” compressed natural gas. The firefighters successfully put out the fire.
In the latest update by the Fire & Rescue Department in Thailand, the rescue team has confirmed that as of today (October 2), the number of deaths has increased to 25.
