A British influencer who plunged 630ft to his death while attempting to scale Spain’s tallest bridge was captured in a haunting final social media post looking over the edge of a New York city skyscraper.

Lewis Stevenson, 26, was warned by loved-ones not to attempt the risky climb up the Castilla-La Mancha bridge in Talavera de la Reina, a 90-minute drive from Madrid, on Sunday. Lewis, who would document his climbing adventures on social media, took to the bridge without safety equipment.

In a final haunting image posted of himself on Instagram, the daredevil was captured sitting at the top of a New York city skyscraper with his legs hanging over the edge. He is joined by six fellow thrill seekers, and all appear to have no safety equipment on them.

In a seperate snap on Facebook, the 26-year-old is seen standing over the edge of a high-rise in Croatia overlooking greenery. The caption reads: "Croatian sunsets are lovely."

Lewis' heartbroken grandfather Clifford Stevenson, 70, said the family had urged the influencer not to go ahead with his last climb, MailOnline reports. Clifford, from Derby, said: "We all tried to talk him out of it. We were always trying to talk him out of doing things but that was the way he was.

"'He loved doing it, always went out there believing he'd be alright. He did what he did for his own pleasure. He did not get any money for it, he was an adventurer."

A series of touching tributes have since poured in on Instagram from friends of the climber, who was described as a "legend." One pal, named as Kaz, wrote: "Grateful to have met you and grateful to have been able to call you my friend. One of the nicest blokes and a big part of the community, he’ll be booting doors off in the sky for sure. Love you buddy, rest easy."

Fellow climber hexada_ghost said: "I know you won't read this but I also know we'll meet again to tell you. In this ephemeral world we create infinite memories, like that last dinner before your trip where we talk about the end of our days, about if everything we do is really worth it, you answered me: 'life is a contract and death comes included, enjoy this time while we can do it'".

Lewis is believed to have been with a 24-year-old fellow Brit when tragedy struck. The Talavera de la Reina Town Council has now urged members of the public that climbing the bridge "is totally prohibited and cannot be done under any circumstances".

The Castilla-La Mancha is a cable-stayed bridge boasting 152 wire ropes. It opened on October 17 2011 and cost almost £62 million to build.
