Rolf Harris' wife Alwen Hughes, who has died aged 93, stood by the disgraced paedophile.

The widow of the disgraced TV star stood by her husband after he was sentenced to five years and nine months in jail in 2014 for 12 indecent assaults on four underage girls between 1968 and 1986. Rolf died in May 2023, also aged 93, after being diagnosed with neck cancer.

Alwen's death certificate states she died from a stroke after suffering with the fragility of old age and vascular dementia. She died on August 15 and will be laid to rest by cremation.

The widow was born on December 16, 1931, in north London but grew up in Wales. She was a jeweller and sculptor, known for her eccentric clothing. Alwen met Rolf in the early 1950s at an art school in Kennington, south London before going on to tie the knot with the TV star at St Saviour's Church in Paddington in 1958.

Alwen eccentric side was on full display when they got married and the couple were pictured with her poodle on the big day – which is said to have been her bridesmaid. She gave birth to her and Rolf's only child, daughter Bindi on March 10, 1964.

The family of three remained close throughout the disgraced star's life with the mother and daughter seen supporting Rolf during his court cases. They were seen by his side walking into Southwark Crown Court together every day during his first trial in 2014.

Rolf was convicted of a series of horrific offences including assaults on an eight-year-old seeking an autograph, two girls in their early teens and a range of abuses of his daughter's friend, starting when she was just 13, and taking place over 16 years. Speaking after Rolf's conviction in 2014, singer Vince Hill said: "Alwen is very poorly. We're all very worried about her.

"I don't know if she will survive his prison term. She's quite fragile. She suffers from arthritis and she's had hip replacements and God knows what." In 2017, Rolf was put on trial for a second time, accused of four indecent assaults on three teenage girls.

He denied the charges and was found not guilty after the jury failed to agree on a verdict. Following the verdict, his solicitor read out a statement on his behalf, revealing that Rolf wanted to spend the rest of his life with his wife.

"Whilst I am pleased that this is finally over, I feel no sense of victory - just relief," he read. "I am 87 years old, my wife is in ill-health and we simply want to spend our remaining time together." Rolf was released from prison in May 2017 after carrying out three years of his sentence at HMP Stafford.

Rolf and Alwen spent his final years together, with the latter spending her final days in the £5million riverside mansion they once shared together in Berkshire.
