Uttar Pradesh declares Maha Kumbh area new district
The U.P. government’s decision aims to facilitate better organisation and governance during the significant religious event
by Mayank Kumar · The HinduThe Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday declared the Maha Kumbh area a new district ahead of the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela. The new district will be known as Maha Kumbh Mela district. The government order was issued on late Sunday night.
“I, Ravindra Kumar Mandad, District Magistrate, in continuation of the instructions given in Government’s letter No.-3966 / 9-1-2024-408057 dated 25.11.2024, exercising the powers conferred under Section 2 (th) of the Uttar Pradesh Prayagraj Mela Authority, Prayagraj Act, 2017, hereby issue a notification to declare Mahakumbh Mela District for the organization of Mahakumbh 2025,” states the government order.
“In the Maha Kumbh Mela district/area, the Mela Adikari, Kumbh Mela, Prayagraj will have the powers of Executive Magistrate, District Magistrate and Additional District Magistrate under Section 14(1), and other sections of the Indian Civil Defense Code, 2023, and all the powers of the District Magistrate under the said code or any other law currently in force and will have the right to exercise all the powers of the Collector in all categories of cases,” the government order added.

The decision is seen as a major administrative move aimed at managing the upcoming religious event that is slated for January next year. The notification for the new district includes 67 villages of four tehsils of Prayagraj district, with 25 revenue villages from Maha Kumbh district’s Sadar tehsil, three from Sorav, 20 from Phulpur, and 19 from Karchana block. Uttar Pradesh eyes that over 400 million devotees are expected to visit Maha Kumbh 2025.
