Veteran CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury passes away - Greater Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep 12: Veteran CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury passed away today after battling prolonged illness. He was 72.

Yechury was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on August 19 for the treatment of a pneumonia-like chest infection.

   

CPI(M) had earlier said in a social media post that Yechury was on respiratory support and his condition was critical. He had recently undergone cataract surgery.

Yechury joined CPI (M) nearly 50 years ago as a student leader. He served as the general secretary of the party for three consecutive terms, from 2005 to 2015. He was re-elected to the post again in 2018.

Yechury also served as a Rajya Sabha member from 2005 to 2017.
