With homes on sale from just £5,000, this North East town is constantly named the most affordable place to live in the UK.

Although the town is small, there is plenty to attract potential buyers to the area, aside from appealing property prices. Shildon is just 13 miles from Durham city, while also being located close to the countryside and the stunning North East coast.

And there's also a number of independant businesses within the town, including cafes, hairdressers and barbershops, and pubs. Business owners in Shildon, previously described a sense of community in the area as fellow business owners would help each other out and locals would give a friendly smile as the walked by.

At the time of writing, the cheapest property for sale in Shildon was on the market for £5,000, The Express reports. This was followed by a property on sale for £10,000. The median value of a home is £69,650 while the average income of a couple per year is £65,438.

It is among eight areas in County Durham to occupy spots in the 10 of the most affordable areas in England, according to Zoopla. And it's not the first time that Shildon has topped the list of most affordable place to live in the UK.

The town has an interesting history and is home to a Locomotion Museum as the first station in England was built on the Stockton and Darlington Railway. In the centre of Shildon is Hackworth Park, which is named after locomotive engineer, Timothy Hackworth. Visitors to the area will be able to find a statue of him, as well as a drinking fountain in the park, which was created to commemorate one of the engines he designed.

If you’re looking to buy a property in an affordable yet homely area - Shildon could be the perfect place for you.
